Audiobooks and Christian podcasts can both give you something worthwhile to listen to while walking, traveling, or doing things around the house.

But they work differently.

An audiobook usually gives you one connected book or theme to follow over time. A podcast gives you individual episodes, often on many different topics.

Which one should you choose?

Choose an audiobook when you want to stay with one subject

One advantage of an audiobook is that you stay with the same subject longer. An audiobook can help when you want to think about one topic for several days or weeks.

Maybe the book is about prayer, hope, forgiveness, leadership, or serving others.

You listen to one chapter, then come back to the same author and subject the next time.

That continuity can be helpful. You do not have to search through dozens of episode titles or decide what you want to hear every day.

John Christopher Frame has three books available in audio:

Homeless at Harvard tells about John’s summer spent getting to know people experiencing homelessness around Harvard Square. The book includes their stories and first-person perspectives along with the author’s experiences.

7 Attitudes of the Helping Heart focuses on how Christians can better care for people in need and put their faith into action.

Increase Your Leadership Impact looks at practical ways to grow as a Christian leader and better serve the people around you.

If you prefer something shorter, you could also try From Sea to Shining Sea: Hope for Your Journey, a free 7-day Bible App plan with audio narration. Each day includes a short devotion based on travel experiences in a different state.

Choose a podcast when you want more variety

Christian podcasts give you more options.

One episode may be about prayer. Another may feature an interview. Another might look at a Bible passage, marriage, leadership, missions, or something happening in the church.

That can be useful when you want to choose something based on what you are dealing with that day.

Podcasts can also introduce you to Christian teachers, authors, pastors, and people whose experiences are very different from your own.

You can move from one topic to another without spending much time thinking about any of them.

So choose carefully. Ask yourself whether what you hear actually helps you follow Jesus.

Think about when you listen

Your routine may make the choice easier. If you listen at roughly the same time every day, an audiobook can give you something consistent to return to.

If your schedule changes, a podcast may be easier because you can choose something that fits the time you have.

Either one can work during a commute, walk, workout, or trip.

And you do not have to listen during every free minute. Sometimes silence may be better.

After you have listened, you might turn everything off for a while and think about what you just heard.

Do not let listening replace Scripture

A Christian audiobook or podcast can be useful, but remember that you are listening to someone else’s teaching or reflection.

Go back to the Bible too.

If someone discusses a passage, read it for yourself.

Look at what comes before and after it.

Ask whether the speaker’s interpretation makes sense in the context of the passage.

Listening can also lead you into prayer. Maybe something reminds you of a person you should pray for. Maybe you realize you need to change something. Pause and talk with God about it.

Try both

You might listen to an audiobook during your morning commute and a Christian podcast on a longer weekend drive.

Or finish one audiobook before trying several podcast episodes.

Pay attention to what actually helps you.

Are you remembering anything later?

Is what you hear affecting how you pray or live?

If not, you may simply be filling silence.

Choose the format that helps you pay attention to God rather than just giving you something else to listen to.
