Yes, travel can deepen your Christian faith.
A trip changes your normal routine. You may be even busier than you normally are, going from place to place. Or, you may have more time to think, pray, or simply look around.
Either way, travel can give you opportunities to pay attention to God in ways you may not during a normal week.
Notice God’s creation
One obvious way travel can affect your faith is through what you see.
You may stand near the ocean, walk through a national park, or look at a sky that seems much bigger than the one you usually notice at home.
Take time to actually look and more fully experience what you are seeing. Enjoy it. Thank God for it. Be still for a few minutes.
Let travel slow you down
Trips do not always go smoothly.
When delays or wrong turns happen, you can pray and ask God for patience.
You may still be annoyed. That’s normal.
But think of the experiences you have when you travel—and other times in your life, too—as chances to practice grace with the people around you and the experience you’re having.
Pay attention to people
Travel also puts you around people you would not normally meet.
Be kind. Listen. Allow God’s Spirit to shine through you.
You may also spend time with people whose culture, language, or background is very different from yours.
That can be good for you. It can remind you that your own way of living is not the only way people experience the world.
Visit a local church
If you are traveling over a weekend, consider visiting a local church on Sunday morning.
This can be especially meaningful when you are in another city, state, or country. You get to worship with Christians you probably would not otherwise meet and see what church life looks like in that community.
The music may be different. The church service and worship style may feel very different. You may hear songs you do not know or experience a service that is more formal or less formal than what you are used to.
That can be a good experience.
You can worship God with other believers and also learn something about how Christians in another place live out their faith.
You may leave with a new memory from your trip and a reminder that the body of Christ reaches far beyond your own church.
Spend time with God during the trip
Your normal devotional routine may change when you travel.
That is fine, and you might make that intentional.
You may choose to read a few verses in the morning. Pray before you leave the hotel. Listen to an audio devotion while driving. Sit quietly with God before lying down at night.
You could also use the Bible App while you travel. From Sea to Shining Sea: Hope for Your Journey is a 7-day YouVersion Bible App plan based on travel experiences in seven states, from Maine to Hawaii. You can read or listen to the short devotions during your trip.
A travel devotional can also give you something simple to return to each day.
Think about what you are learning
Maybe someone you met gave you a different perspective.
Maybe you realized how fortunate you are in some area of your life.
Maybe a beautiful place reminded you of God’s creation.
Maybe you saw a need that you had never thought much about before.
Pay attention to those things.
You might write down a sentence at the end of the day or talk about it with the person traveling with you.
Bring something home
After you return, ask yourself whether there is anything from the trip you want to carry into your daily life going forward.
Maybe you want to pray for a place you visited or spend more time outside.
Maybe you want to be more welcoming to visitors in your own community.
Or maybe the trip simply reminded you to slow down sometimes.
Travel can deepen your Christian faith when you allow some of what you see and experience to affect how you pray, think, and treat people after you come home.
