You know how it feels when you’re going through a rough spot.

You may feel tired.

You may feel disappointed.

Joy feels lost.

You’re unsure how long things will stay this way.

So, when Christians talk about finding joy in trials, it’s important to be honest. Joy does not mean pretending the pain is not real or forcing yourself to feel happy.

Christian joy is deeper than that.

This is key: it comes from knowing Christ is still with you, even when life feels heavy.

James 1:2–3 says, “My brothers and sisters, you will have many kinds of troubles. But this gives you a reason to be very happy. You know that when your faith is tested, your patience has a chance to grow.”

Of course, that is not easy to live out.

Be honest about the trial

You do not need to pretend with God.

If your heart is hurting, say so.

If you feel weak, bring that weakness to Him.

If you are confused, tell Him that too.

You can say:

“Lord, help me today.”

“Give me strength.”

“Help me trust You.”

Those prayers can be valuable.

Remember what has not changed

A trial can make everything feel unstable. But not everything has changed.

God’s character has not changed.

The cross has not changed.

Christ’s promise to be with His people has not changed.

Your situation may be painful, uncertain, or exhausting. But it is not the whole story.

That is one reason Christians can have joy even while they grieve.

The joy is not in the pain itself.

The joy is in Christ.

Read that last sentence again.

Take one day at a time

You can start by asking one simple question:

Where do I need to trust God today?

That may be enough.

You may need to make a phone call.

You may need to forgive someone.

You may need to rest.

You may need to stop replaying the same fear in your mind.

Notice what God may be growing in you

Suffering isn’t pleasant.

But God can work in you while the trial is happening.

You may become more patient.

You may become more compassionate.

You may learn to pray with more honesty.

You may start caring for others with more tenderness because you know what pain feels like.

Those changes are not small.

Stay close to other believers

Pain gets heavier when you carry it alone.

Let trusted Christians pray for you. Sometimes you need presence, prayer, and a reminder that God has not left you.

A faithful friend, small group, pastor, or church member can help you keep your eyes on Christ when your own thoughts feel dark.

Keep asking God for help

It is right to ask God for relief.

Ask for healing.

Ask for change.

Ask for wisdom.

Ask for rescue.

Christ knows suffering. He is not distant from pain. He is present with His people in it.

Joy can begin to grow from that.

Not because everything suddenly feels easy.

But because you are not alone.

A short prayer for joy in trials

Dear God, I feel tired in this trial. Please help me trust You today. Give me strength to keep going. Help me find joy in Christ, even while life feels hard. Amen.

One question for today

Where is this trial inviting you to trust Jesus more deeply?

You do not need to answer perfectly.

Just start there.

Bring the real pain to God.

Hold on to the Gospel.

Take the next small step with Christ.
